Farewell to Sam Galanis:
After 32 years as a member of MANG Aero Club, Sam Galanis has resigned from the club as of the end of June. MANG Aero Club would like to take this opportunity to thank Sam for being the backbone of this club for all these years. In his years with MANG, Sam have held positions on the Board of Directors and countless other activities. The Club is truly going to miss him. We wish Sam a fond farewell and our best to him always.
Sam is not leaving the aviation community. Sam has taken the big plunge and purchased a Cessna 182 with a retractable gear. If you should see Sam out flying someday, stop by and say hi and thank him for all the years of services to MANG Aero Club.
Meet Chris Jones, new member:
I am married to my wife of 40 years, Sue. We have two girls that have young children. Ten years ago I began to take flying lessons. It took me a year to get my private, because of work, etc. I got my instrument ticket in 2000. Now I am working on the commercial rating. I was a partner in a PA180, but sold my share. I fly for the Civil Air Patrol as much as I can. I enjoy the people that are associated with flying and flying itself very much. If I had known how neat it is to be able to pilot a plane, I would have started at a much younger age. -Chris
Meet Michael Stier, new member:
I am almost 41, married 16 years to Theresa, with two girls 12 and 14. I moved from San Antonio to Northville 1.5 years ago. I work at Alcoa Automotive in Farmington Hills - VP AFL Automotive Components. I was initially interested in flying in 1980 (10th grade) but didn't have the money. I actually started lessons in November 2004, and I currently have 40 hours in the C172. I recently soloed with instruction from Tricia Yates CFI.
Progress on the Archer re-assembly has been slow because John Solo discovered additional damage that was done by the rescue and recovery company. In order to authorize the work, the insurance company had to be brought in to inspect the damage. Rather than issue projections that tend to turn out not to become true, the board will try to issue significant status reports to the membership only when the facts are certain.
Chief Maintenance Office, Paul Fortino, wants to remind all members that it is very important that someone in maintenance be notified, either by e-mail or by phone, whenever anything significant is written up in the squak sheets. The squaks sheets are official documents that are open to the FAA. If the FAA should ever examine our squak sheets and find that a problem was documented, but then ignored, then we could be fined $1000 per flight for all flights made after the write-up. So if you write up something that relates to safety or airworthiness, then make it a point to follow up with a call or an e-mail. Notify either the maintenance officer for the specific plane, or notify Paul.
The Warrior compass had been adjusted and a new compass card is in place.
Paul Fortino found some replacement old-style fire extinguishers for $166, so we decided to buy one for the C-172.
If the C-172 right wing fuel drain drips after checking fuel, pull it down by hand. It is scheduled to be fixed soon.
C-172 brakes have been replaced.
If no one has a better idea, we will try to have the Holiday Party at Atlantis, just like last year. If you would like to propose an alternative, please contact Dave LaPointe.
As many of you have already discovered, the new Jet Center fuel cards are in the books for the planes and ready to be used. These cards replace the old keys for the self-service fuel farm. Jet Center has a new controller device that contains both a credit card reader and a smart card reader. The credit card reader is for visitors without an account at Jet Center. Since we have an account at Jet Center, we use the smart cards, which also gives us a break on the price as compared to credit card purchases. Simply place the smart card in the slot as indicated by the directions on the device. The display screen will ask you if you want to dispense 100LL fuel and if you have connected the ground wire. Connect the ground wire and then use the "Yes" pushbutton. Then dispense the fuel. You can remove the card as soon as these questions are answered, even before you dispense fuel. As before, write down the gallons dispensed in the book. There is no longer any "meter" reading to write down, as we had for the old system. Keep the smart card in the pocket of the book for the plane. The smart cards are deliberately unlabelled to prevent fraud if a card is ever lost.
