Club Rules for Giving Flight Instruction
The August Board meeting was devoted in large part to the discussion of Club Rules regarding the giving of flight instruction in Club planes. It was decided to clarify these rules and remind the Club members, particularly flight instructors, how these rules should be interpreted.
Our Club values the presence of flight instructors among our members because they provide a convenient way for members to keep current and satisfy various FAA requirements, such as for Flight Reviews and Instrument Competency Checks. They also serve to instruct Club members who are student pilots. However, Club planes should not be used to provide flight instruction to non-members, even if it is done at no cost to the student. Such activity presents the appearance that our Club is a Flight School, which would subject us to additional FAA and insurance regulations.
Coming Soon: MANG Constitution, By-Laws, Regulations on-line
Partly because of the discussion of the Flight Instructor rules, the Secretary decided to put the major Club founding documents on-line for ready access by all members. We hope to have this completed by September.
The Warrior has new seat covers installed.
A new altitude encoder has been installed in the Warrior, and connected to the Garmin 430 so the missing altitude data message does not appear anymore. (This only works when transponder is in the "ALT" mode, not in the "STBY" mode).
All three aircraft are now IFR certified.
The C-172 has developed a cracked cylinder, which has, by now, been fixed.
Estimated completion date on the Archer is 8/20/05. Additional cosmetic repairs on the Archer will not be done at this time so it can be returned to service sooner. These issues will be taken care of during the next winter annual.
Note regarding the Archer: The Board would like to thank the membership for their patience during the reassembly of the Archer. We know this has been a long drawn out ordeal. But we want to be sure we have a plane that will be safe to fly again. Mr. John Solo of Solo Aviation has been very meticulous in how the Archer has been put back together. Hopefully it will not be much longer.
Don't Leave Tow-bars Attached!
Paul Fortino reminds us not to leave the airplane tow-bars attached to the nose-wheels of any airplane. An attached tow-bar presents a tripping hazard for those walking near the plane, and it is a danger to the prop, which is sometimes rotated during maintenance and can strike the tow-bar. Instead, when you are done using the tow-bar, place it on the floor next to the nose wheel under the plane where it can be easily found by the next person needing it.
Dr. Robert Gordon will be the guest speaker at our General Membership Meeting on Sept. 22nd. Dr. Gordon will speak on issues related to aviation medical certificates and exams as well as answer any questions you may have about aviation medicine.
The plans for the Holiday Party on Dec. 4th have been finalized. We will be returning to Atlantis in Livonia for a dinner, so mark your calendar.
