Plane Washes are scheduled to reserve the planes from 9 AM to 1 PM. This should allow members convenient use of the planes on plane-wash days.
You may have noticed that things have changed regarding fuel at Willow Run. The self-service pump at Jet Center East (now called AvFlight East) is closed and will remain so until June 30th. Our alternate fuel supplier, Active Aero, has become our mainstay. Some MANG members reported last year that Active Aero was unreliable in answering their phone or radio, but recent reports from members indicate that they have improved. On my last flight I just called them on the radio on 122.825 while I was taxing back to the hangar, and they were there in three minutes. Just tell them you want fuel at the Birdcage and that you are with MANG. If you get back to the hangar before they show up, don't push the plane into the hangar yet because they will not fuel the plane unless it is sitting outside of the hangar. After fueling your plane, they give you a receipt which you can put in the zippered pouch in the front of the book for the plane. If you need fuel before your flight, you can call them on 734-547-7359. Note that Active Aero specifies a 10-gallon minimum for delivery from their truck. Active Aero fuel prices have been considerably lower than AvFlight, but that may change when Active Aero uses up their current lot of fuel that they bought at low prices. In the meantime, try to save your Club money by getting fuel from Active Aero. The contact information for Active Aero and AvFlight will be posted at the hangars and in the planes. If you do go to AvFlight West, make sure to inform the technician that we do have an account with them and a card on file. AvFlight can be reached by phone at 734-482-2621.
What if you should have to pay for fuel yourself? If you are away from Willow Run, then enter the amount of fuel purchased on the timesheet. Then save your fuel receipts showing the tail number and the amount of fuel. Send a copy of the receipt along with your next MANG dues payment. Your MANG account will be credited with a reimbursement based on the lower of what you actually paid and the best weekday rate available at Willow Run at the end of the previous month.
Finally, remember that MANG policy requires that you fill the tanks after your flight if the total tach time since the last fill-up is more than 1.5 hours.
MDOT Safety Seminar: Flying to Canada
The postcards have been mailed out from MDOT. The MANG-sponsored MDOT Safety Seminar is on for May 25th. In addition to learning about how to fly over the border, this will also be a great opportunity for us to promote our Club among the general population of Michigan pilots. The program is from 7:00 to 8:00 at the Plymouth Library. If you would like to help out in setting things up, show up early or call our Safety/Training Officer, John Keck..
Meet new member, Jaimie Van Keuren:
I am a Technical Specialist on the Data Networks for Sears Holdings Company. I currently live in Dearborn Heights but am hoping to move out toward Dexter/Chelsea this year. I was born and raised in Michigan. I served 6 years in the U.S. Navy as a Sonar Technician spending most of my time in Charleston, S.C. and San Diego, CA. I have a wife Misty, son Jonathan and a daughter Haley. I have always had a fascination with flying. I finally did something about it and started training at Kitze Aviation at Mettetal airport. I went through a few instructors there and ended up getting discouraged. My schedule and the instructor's just didn't work out. I then went to Berz Flight Training at the Oakland/Troy airport and finished my training.
We have had a number of cylinders go bad on our aircraft. This may or may not be due to improper leaning, but this does afford us a good opportunity to review proper leaning procedures. Dale Thorsby has located the following articles in PDF form relating to leaning through the Lycoming website:
Safety/Training Corner (by John Keck)
Aviator's Code of Conduct: Part 2 of 7 (rules for a Pilot to live by)
We want to know "Are you interested"?

In receiving or riding along on Spring Refresher Flights? We need Buddy/Safety Pilots?
Haven't flown in a while.. neither have I. I didn't want to go alone, so I found a Buddy/Safety Pilot and practiced 5 T/O & Landings (Short/Softfield), Slow Flight, Steep Turns, and Power-on/off Stalls... the Power on with a 15' bank got my attention, but I maintained coordination and control. The Warrior just hung in the air. What a great confidence booster!
I also just went up with Robert Scott. He asked if I could be his Buddy/Safety Pilot. I jumped at the chance. Bob made clear what he expected of me and off we went. We conducted his required 6 Instrument Approaches and Holding. Bob did wonderfully and I learned from the experience too! At one point while on the VOR-A Approach into YIP, ATC called out a traffic alert. There was VFR traffic in our flight path. We immediately agreed I would take the controls. I turned 360 to the right, kept an eye on the traffic and returned Bob to his original flight path. Good example of why a safety pilot is so important!
In becoming part of our new Breakfast/Flyin Club? Buddy Pilots? Safety Pilots?
Roderick Lelental, Mel Newdigger, Dave Jordan, Bahman Mirshab and John Keck have signed on. We are willing and able to fly! Call us! If you want to sign on to one of the flying lists... just let me know!
In making our own flight safety video?
We need any flight related video and pictures to compile our upcoming Safety Video.
Do you wish to add to this? If any or all of these ideas appeal to your sense of adventure, contact John Keck and find out more!
