Bill Lewis Speaks at Membership Meeting
On September 17th, MANG members were treated to an educational presentation by Bill Lewis, self-proclaimed Garminologist, on the operation of the Garmin 450 radioes. In his 1.5 hour talk he used the computer simulator to walk though all the "chapters" and "pages" of the Garmin displays. He showed us the "life-saver" page to use in case of a failure of the gryos. He illustrated several general principles that helped to unify the operation; he showed how the flashing cursor changes the context of the right knobs. If you did not attend Monday's meeting, but would still like to learn from Mr. Lewis, he can be contacted for private Garmin training at (810) 231-2329. Bill Lewis is also an MCFI and a Designated Pilot Examiner.
John Keck recently reported finding nearly three full sample cups of water in the Cessna engine sump. Do not take fuel sampling for granted. Water gets into the fuel by condensation in the tanks and by contamination from the fuel source. Just because it has never happened to you does not mean you can let down your guard. Look closely at your fuel samples before every flight. They should be clean and blue and smell just right. (You know that wonderful 100LL smell!).
There have been several instances lately of planes dripping excess fuel in our hangars. This is not only a waste and a mess, but is also a safety hazzard. If you are filling the tanks yourself, please don't go above the bottom of the filler neck. If you are having the plane fueled by an FBO, then a gentle reminder to them may be in order.
Please remember to write down all fuelings in the time sheets when you fly. We need accurate reports to reconcile our fuel bill and to calculate performance figures for our planes. Also it helps the next pilot to know the fuel situation.
Board Positions - Nominations Open
The President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer positions for MANG Aero for 2008 will be elected at the Holiday Banquest on Saturday, December 1st. You can nominate yourself or someone else. Once a new board is elected, appointments or re-appointments will be made for Operations, Safety, Maintenance Chief, Archer Maintenance, Warrior Maintenance, and Skyhawk maintenance. All officers and appointees receive flying hours credit as set forth in the club by-laws.
DVD on User Fees from AOPA in MANG Office
Joe McEvoy has received a DVD from AOPA describing the consequences of user fees, including how general aviation operates in Europe where user fees have been implemented. If you want to find out more about this issue, this DVD is available in the MANG office for borrowing. (Please return it when you are done with it.)
