Which Instructors Can You Use?
This issue came up at the last Board Meeting, so we thought it would be good to review our Club policy. There are several scenarios:
1. For Primary Training or when your BFR has expired.
In both of these cases, you are not allowed to act as Pilot in Command. Therefore your instructor must be Pilot in Command. In that case you can only use one of the MANG Aero Club approved instructors, found on this list. Other instructors would not be covered by our insurance, and it is a violation of Club rules to let another instructor be Pilot in Command in our Club planes.
2. For IFR Training when an IFR flight plan is filed.
There are various ways of getting IFR training, such as flying under the hood. But if your training includes filing an IFR flight plan, you must be legally able to act as Pilot in Command under IFR flight. You are not allowed to do that if you are not yet IFR rated, or if your IFR currency has expired. In that case your instructor would file the IFR flight plan, and act as Pilot in Command. Again, that instructor would have to be on the list of Club approved flight instructors.
3. For any Training when you are Pilot in Command.
If you are receiving flight instruction under circumstances where you are allowed to be Pilot in Command, then you can use any flight instructor you want - whether that instructor is on our Club list or not. This includes getting a BFR before your current one expires, getting IFR training where no flight plan is filed, or getting IFR training with an IFR flight plan, as long as you are still IFR current and legally able to file such a flight plan.
Nominations are still open for President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The election will be held at our Holiday Party on Dec.4th. You can nominate yourself. Contact any current Board Member.
We hope to have a great turnout at the MANG Holiday Party on Dec. 4th. This year it is at DeLuca's Restaruant. You should have received an e-mail on October 28th from Dave LaPointe giving all the details, including menu selections. Please let Dave know as soon as possible that you will be coming.
Meet Chuck Wiltsie, new MANG flight instructor
There is a new MANG-approved flight instructor: Chuck Wiltsie. Chuck is an Aviation Flight Science graduate of Western Michigan University. His ratings include Commercial (Airplane Single and Multiengine Land, Airplane Single Engine Sea, Instrument Airplane). He is a CFI and CFII who is willing to do primary training, BFRs, instrument instruction, IPCs, and club checkouts. He has been instructing since 2004, and is currently instructing at Kitze Aviation at Mettetal. The list of Club instructors here has been updated to include his contact information. Welcome aboard, Chuck!
Board votes "no" on Leaseback Proposal
As some of you may be aware, we were presented with a proposal for entering into a leaseback arrangement with an individual who owns a 2006 C172SP with a glass cockpit G1000. Various terms were discussed under which we could make this aircraft available to our members. However in the judgement of the Board, the terms were not that favorable, especially given today's economy. After several attempts at reaching a more favorable arrangement, the Board has decided to decline the offer. The owner of the C172SP has been informed, "Thanks, but no thanks."
Due to the departure of Larry Millen from our Club, we needed to fill the position of Archer Maintenace Officer. At the last Board meeting, Mario Pecchia, who had been the Cessna Maintenance Officer, was reassigned to the Archer. And Paul Plumley was appointed as the new Cessna Maintenance Officer.
