Risks of Over-filling Fuel Tanks
Paul Fortino related an interesting experiment at the last board meeting. He placed a bucket under the vent tube of one of our planes that had been over-filled. The weather was changing, and the fuel expanded and was leaking out the vent. He collected about 1/2 gallon of fuel from that leaking vent tube. Without the bucket, that fuel would have ended up on the floor of our hangar, causing a mess and a safety hazzard.
So how can you prevent this from happening? Simple. Do not over-fill the fuel tanks. How can you be sure you are not over-filling the tanks? That takes a care. Stop fueling as soon as the fuel touches any part of the filler neck. That can be a little difficult to see, especailly in the glare of bright sun. The filler neck extends several inches down into the tank. Make sure you can see it well when you are fueling, and stop before the fuel starts coming up into the filler neck.
On April 26th, MANG Aero Club will be sponsoring an MDOT Safety Seminar. This is always an interesting event. This year we will hear from Tera Krupp about "Checklists: Are You Using Them the Right Way?", and "Survival: Are You Prepared?". This is also a great opportunity to promote our club to other pilots - pilots that we need to fill out our membership and keep us financially solvent. We currently have 7 openings. So come to the semiar. Wear your MANG shirt or hat if you have one, and show the guests what we think of our club. The safety seminar is held at the Plymouth Library starting at 6 PM.
Joe McEvoy has provided the following reports, which can also be viewed from the MANG homepage:
