GPS Video Shown at September General Membership Meeting

The September General Membership Meeting was held at the Plymouth Library. After a short business meeting, the program for the evening was conducted by Dave Schrader. Dave showed a video from AvWeb and IFR Magazine on using the Garmin 430 to navigate some clearances based on VORs. We stopped the video at several points to discuss the techniques we had learned, and even tried some of them with the Garmin 430 simulator. I learned how to use OBS mode to effectively modify flight plans. If you would like to see the video we watched, it is available here on AvWeb.

By the way, if you were wondering what happened to the vote on Officer Compensation, it had to be postponed until another General Membership Meeting because we did not have a quorum, which is necessary to take a vote on a bylaw change.

ATC Phraseology to Change Sept. 30th

Just a reminder from FAASaftey.gov:

"Line Up and Wait" - Notice Number: NOTC2554

Beginning September 30, 2010, the words “Line Up and Wait” will replace the words
“Position and Hold” to instruct a pilot to enter the runway to await take-off clearance.
Under the new “Line Up and Wait” phraseology, the controller will:

-State your call-sign;
-State the departure runway;
-State “Line Up and Wait”.

Exercise Caution. Be aware the phrase “Traffic Holding in Position” will continue to be
used to advise other aircraft that traffic has been authorized to “Line Up and Wait” on
an active runway.

REMEMBER: Never cross a hold line without explicit ATC instructions. You may not enter a
runway unless you have been:
-Instructed to cross or taxi onto that specific runway
-Cleared to take off from that runway, or
-Instructed to “Line Up and Wait” on that specific runway.

Please visit: www.faa.gov/go/runwaysafety/ for more details on the change as well as to
view an instructional animation explaining the new phraseology.

If in doubt ASK!

Pilot Privileges and Limitations

Here is a FAA Seminar being held at Ann Arbor Airport on Saturday, Sept. 25th:

The sponsor for this seminar is the Michigan FAASTeam. A credit of KEB 1.00 is available for this WINGS/AMT Program. Click here to view the WINGS Program help page.http://www.faasafety.gov/SPANS/event_details.aspx?eid=34086

(As of Sept. 16th, 20 of the 50 available seats have been taken, so register on-line to reserve your seat!)

Stuff Taken from our Planes

Dale Thorsby reports that someone has taken the Michigan Airport Directories from the planes. We only get one copy from the state for each plane we have registered. Check your flight bag and see if you accidentally took a directory with you after your last flight.

Also, someone is taking the first aid kits out of the planes and putting them on the table. These first aid kits were purchased so that members would have some resources in the event of a mishap far away from home. The kits do no good sitting on the table. Besides, we already have a very fine wall-mounted medical kit near the MANG office for needs that arise at the hangars. So please leave the first aid kits in the planes.

Willow Run ID Badging to Resume

As you may remember, the Willow Run Operations office has not been processing badge renewals for a long time, due to a computer system problem and a lack of funds. But that suspension is about to end. The Willow Run Operations office has announced that they have fixed their badging computer system, and will resume badging operations on September 21st.

What does not mean for us? Well, it means that all of us will need to renew our badges, but not immediately. There is a huge backlog of expired badges, as well as new employees at Willow Run who do not yet have an ID badge. When badging starts up again, priority will be given to those who have no badge at all. The Operations Office assures us that until everyone has had an adequate chance to renew their badge, no badge will be turned off. That means you can continue to use your badge to open the gate, even if the badge is technically expired. From what I have been told, the re-badging rush will last at least two months. After that, non-renewed badges will be expired and will stop working in the gate. So make sure you follow through with the renewal process before then. We will keep you posted on the progress of the operation, so you will know when your time is almost up.

If there is one bit of good news in all this it is that this renewal will be free to the applicants. But that good news is balanced by some bad news. Because a new system is starting up, everyone will be required to view the Willow Run Security Training video again and take the test on that video before they can renew their badge.

Since the badging operation is primarily for workers at the airport, the Operations Office is open mostly Monday through Friday during business hours. While that may be very convenient for the workers at the airport, it is not very convenient for us, many of whom can only get to the airport easily on weekends. Therefore there will be several Saturday sessions especially for us tenants. The tentative dates are October 2 and October 16, but this has not yet been firmed up. Again, we will keep you posted on the Saturday sessions as soon as we know for sure when they are scheduled.

Lock the Doors when you Leave

Did you know that the doors to our hangars stay unlocked every time you use your key to open them? Dave LaPointe reports that on several occasions he has found the doors unlocked when he arrived. Check the doors before you leave. If they are unlocked, turn the button on the inside of the door and then close it.
