Your FAA Pilot's Certificate may need replacing
As
you may have heard, all paper Pilot Certificates will become invalid
on March 31 of next year. (Thanks to Paul Fortino for the
heads-up on this.). So if your certificate looks like the one
to the right, you need to order a replacement from the FAA. So,
prompted by Paul's reminder, I went to the FAA website to see what is involved.
The FAA website where you can read about this is www.faa.gov/licenses_certificates/airmen_certification/expiring_paper_certificates. The process I went through was somewhat easier because I had previously registered with Airmen Online Services. But if you haven't registered, now would be a good time to do it. It is free and it makes ordering a replacement for your paper Certificate eaiser.
I decided not to bother with the option for changing by Certificate number, so it is still my Social Security Number. If you have received your Pilot's Certificate recently, it probably is not your SSN. In any case, to apply for the new plastic Pilot's Certificate, you need to specifiy a photo of yourself. But you don't have to get a new picture taken. All you have to do is reference a state driver's license number, or a US passport number, and they will get the picture from their records. After all, they are the government, and they have all this info. So I used my passport number. Finally, you have to pay $2 with a credit card. I'm not sure why they wanted the photo because it does not show up on the new plastic certificate.
The whole process took me only a few minutes, and I got my nice new plastic Pilot's Certificate in the mail about a week later. As Paul said in his e-mail, the FAA may be getting quite busy around March 31st, so it might be good to get this out of the way now before the big rush.
